PCB Depaneling Machine: Cut Path and Board Stress

Choose a PCB depaneling machine from the panel layout and populated board. Compare router, V-score and laser routes using stress, debris and handling trials.

A PCB depaneling machine separates individual boards from a manufactured panel. Choose the process from the panel’s cut features, material and nearby components. The outline drawing alone cannot establish whether the populated board will tolerate the proposed separation method.

For electronics and semiconductor automation, preserve the board’s condition and identity through separation and transfer.

Start with the Available Separation Geometry

A routed tab panel, V-scored panel and unscored panel present different inputs. Confirm which geometry the proposed equipment accepts before comparing output rate.

RouteTrial question
Router cuttingCan the supported panel be cut with acceptable board loading and debris control?
V-score separationIs the board designed for that score geometry and separation action?
Laser cuttingDoes the process suit the material, edge and nearby components?

ASYS’s laser-depaneling description presents a laser route for rigid/flexible PCB applications. Its equipment-specific claims should be checked on the actual board; they are not a reason to omit edge and product inspection.

The process choice must also consider access beneath or above the panel. A tall component near a cut line can change tool clearance even when the bare board is straightforward.

Support the Populated Panel

Workholding must locate the panel and support the load path without pressing against components. Evaluate the last cuts as well as the first: after part of the panel separates, the remaining structure and support can change.

The functional-fixture guide explains why a fixture should represent the product’s relevant support condition. For depaneling, keep individual boards controlled as they become free from the panel.

Include the intended loading and unloading mechanism in the custom automation scope. A fast cutting operation is not the complete cycle if the separated boards are difficult to retrieve without damage.

Inspect More Than the Cut Edge

Review edge condition, particles and the functional characteristics that could be affected by separation. Where board strain is critical, agree an appropriate strain-evaluation trial with the product team. Do not infer “no damage” solely from a clean-looking edge.

Associate the separated board with its test record. The automated test equipment interface can perform the required function check before the board moves to accepted output.

Accept the Actual Panel Family

Trial the populated board variants and cutting programme, including tool condition or laser recipe as applicable. Record the fixture and extraction configuration with the result.
